In Jonathan Swifts satire, A Modest plot (1729), Swift makes a wild and far-fetched suggestion to the race of Ireland to scan the young of the poor people. He proposes several reasons for this resultant affair to the task of an over-abundance of poor people living on the streets of Ireland.
